The Texas State Fair is entering its last week for 2014. Soon, the next anniversary will be upon us, the 51st anniversary of the death of JFK. The largest State Fair in the country is not only known for its largest Ferris Wheel in the world, the TEXAS STAR, strangely fried foods and Big Tex, but also for its dubious affiliations with another very Texas event: The Assassination of JFK.[i]
Here are a list of facts that tie the two events together. Did you know?
- Governor John Connally wanted the President to speak at the Woman’s Building on the Texas Fairgrounds. Plans were changed and the more modern Trade Mart was chosen for the presidential luncheon.[ii]
- Jack Ruby’s friend, Larry Meyers, invested $500.00 in a State Fair Midway program that included Joyce MacDonald and Larry Crafard. In this carnival type tent, they showed a film called “How Hollywood Made Movies.” The venture only lasted a short while and MacDonald and Crafard went to work for Ruby at the Carousel Club. Some people believe Crafard looked much like Lee Harvey Oswald
- The men who produced the ‘How Hollywood Made Movies” were Marvin Gardner, Robert Craven and Derostus “Dexe” Miles.[iii]
- The Dallas Civil Defense Emergency Bunker, an underground nuclear bomb proof cellar with special communications equipment, was located under the Health and Science Museum, located at the Dallas State Fairgrounds. Could this place be utilized for communications between all the many intelligence units in Dallas on November 22, 1963? For more on this, please read Bill Kelly’s excellent article: Shenanigans at the Dallas State Fairgrounds[iv]

- In 1960, the Dallas Police Department installed a sub-station on the Dallas Fairgrounds.
- W.P. Gannaway was the Captain of a select group of Dallas Police Officers called the “Special Services Bureau.” This unit was, as author Ian Griggs describes, “a covert surveillance and intelligence-gathering unit which, as well as the Criminal Intelligence Squad (CIS), included the Vice and Narcotics Squads. Its regular officers were plain clothes detectives that worked for the Chief of Police and reported to Gannaway. This unit was located on the Dallas Fairgrounds.[v]
- Dallas, Nov. 22 (UPI) - Police today seized Lee H. Oswald, identified as chairman of a ‘Fair Play for Cuba Committee,’ as the prime suspect in the assassination of President Kennedy…Police said Oswald, 24, was accused in the slaying of a Dallas policeman shortly after the shooting of the President. Police Capt. Pat Gannaway said the suspect was an employee in the building where a rifle was found. Gannaway said the suspect had visited Russia and was married to a Russian. This was not immediately confirmed.” This is the same Gannaway of the Special Services Bureau. How did he come about this information so quickly?
- Then there’s Jack Crichton. So influential was he on the Dallas scene as well as business, politics and the erection of the Dallas Civil Defense Emergency Bunker, the mind swirls. Read Russ Baker’s highly recommended book: Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, America’s Invisible Government, and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years. From his book: Early in 1961, Crichton was the moving force behind a cold war readiness program called “Know Your Enemy,” which focused on the Communist intention to destroy the American way of life. In October 1961, Dallas mayor Earle Cabell introduced a short documentary Communist Encirclement – 1961. Afterward, the Dallas Morning News wrote that the Channel 8 switchboard was “flooded . . . with calls from viewers lauding the program, which deals frankly with Communist infiltration.” So great was the sense of alarm that at the 1961 Texas State Fair in Dallas, 350 people per hour made their way through an exhibitor’s bomb shelter.[vi]
